Why don’t antibiotics work on viruses? The difference between viral and bacterial infections

Did you know? Antibiotics target bacterial structures, making them essential for treating certain bacterial infections. On the other hand, because a virus doesn’t have a bacterial structure, antibiotics don’t kill viral infections. This is why we can’t take antibiotics to make a cold or COVID-19 go away.

Viral Infection Symptoms

What is a viral infection? Viruses and viral infections are very tiny germs, some of which can infect human cells and cause illness. Common viruses include the common cold, the flu, and COVID-19, and since they are caused by a virus, antibiotics can’t be used to treat them.

Viral Infection Symptoms typically include:

  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue

Because viruses are not killed by antibiotics, treatment focuses on managing symptoms and maintaining safe vital signs. Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications are usually recommended for relief. Please consult a medical provider if you’re feeling unwell and need treatment.

Bacterial Infection Symptoms

bacterial infection is caused by bacteria and may require antibiotics. Common bacterial infections include strep throat, sinus infections, and pneumonia.

Common Bacterial Infection Symptoms:

  • Persistent high fever
  • Thick, discolored nasal discharge
  • Severe sore throat (often with white spots in the throat)
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
The Difference Between Viral and Bacterial Infections

Can a viral infection turn into a bacterial infection?

A virus won’t morph into a bacterial infection. But a virus can make you much more vulnerable to hosting bacterial infections. Viruses damage our tissues, priming them for a bacterial infection to thrive. As the lung damage from a viral infection becomes more severe, so does the risk of developing a secondary bacterial infection.

People who develop a secondary bacterial infection after the flu often experience a more severe illness overall. While the flu itself can cause significant symptoms, the additional bacterial infection—such as pneumonia—can lead to worse complications, prolonged recovery, and, in some cases, higher mortality. This is why recognizing and treating bacterial infections early is crucial, especially for those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.
