Are There Alternatives to the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

What you need to know about the yellow fever vaccine low supply.

Are you traveling to Africa, Central America, or South America in the foreseeable future? If so, you may already know that you’ll need the yellow fever vaccine before you go. What you may not know is that this vaccine is going out of stock, but there is an alternative available.

The low supply of the yellow fever vaccine is due to Sanofi Pasteur transitioning to a new facility. Until their state-of-the-art facility is open, which is expected in 2018, the yellow fever vaccine is unavailable to order. As there are no other yellow fever vaccines licensed in the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration will allow Sanofi Pasteur’s Stamaril to be used under its investigational new drug program.

The vaccine is considered investigational in the U.S., but it has been manufactured in France and distributed in more than 70 countries for decades. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) even notes that it is “comparable in safety and efficiency to YF-Vax.”
